Preparing for a brighter tomorrow.

Why Join Backpacks for Success!?

The harsh reality of poverty in Orange County is that it affects roughly 100,000 children everyday. More than one-third of children in the United States enter school with significant deficiencies in language, early literacy skills, and motivation to learn, placing them at considerable risk for developing long-term reading difficulties.

According to a recent study, it is estimated that up to 78% of low-income students start the school year with no or inadequate school supplies, putting the student and the teacher at a disadvantage from the very first day of school. In Orange County, 14.3% of all high school students drop out over the course of four years of high school. High school dropouts are more likely to have lower earnings, experience more unemployment, and are more likely to require welfare assistance than their peers who complete high school or college. Nearly three-quarters of Latino youth surveyed who cut their education short during or right after high school say they did so because they had to support their family. Children living in poverty should have an equal opportunity in education which begins by first making sure they have the tools that are vital to their success.

Our Goal!

We can make a difference with your help. Backpacks for Success! will provide 2,000 students in schools located in neighborhoods with significant poverty and unemployment with fully supplied backpacks from donor businesses and organizations. Eligible students between grades K-12 will receive one backpack with supplies such as: pencils, erasers, colored pencils, crayons, glue sticks, paper, and other grade appropriate items.

Backpacks and supplies will be distributed to students prior to the 2011-2012 school year.
